ABOUT “CARRIED AWAY”
In
the

film
by
writer/director
Tom
Huckabee,
Ed
Franklin
(Gabriel

in
a
break-out
performance)

his
dreams

returns
home
to
Texas
at
Christmas
to
find
his
family
in
turmoil.
His
parents’
(Mark
Walters
and
Morgana
Shaw)
marriage
is
on
the
rocks.
His
younger
brother
Davy
(Tyler
Corie)
awaits
trial
for
selling
drugs.
His
older
brother
Steve
(Bryan
Massey)
holds
a
bitter
grudge
against
him.
Worst
of
all,
his
beloved
paternal
grandmother
(Juli
Erickson)
has
been
committed
to
a
nursing
home
after
suffering
a
stroke
which
has
left
her
mentally
disabled.
In
defiance
of
his
father
Rex,
and
with
Granny’s
full
cooperation,
he
kidnaps
her,
intending
to
take
her
back
with
him
to
Los
Angeles.
Rex,
Steve
and
Davy
set
out
after
Ed
and
Granny
in
a
cross-country
pursuit
which
comes
to
a
surprising
and
uplifting
conclusion
in
the
California
desert.
The
film
also
stars
Adam
Dietrich,
Jennifer
Sipes, Bill Flynn, Denise Lee, and Rosaura Cruz.

As
a
young
adult,
director
Huckabee
dealt
first-hand
with
his
grandmother’s
dementia
and
its
effects
on
his
family.
He
wrote
and
directed
CARRIED
AWAY
and
produced
it
along
with
James
M.
Johnston
and
co-producers
Gabriel
Horn
and
Jennifer
Floyd,
all
natives
of
the
Dallas-Fort
Worth
area.
It
was
shot
on
location
in
North
Texas,
Arizona
and
California
during
February
and
March
2009.
The
Arlington,
Texas
home
of
Ken
and
Bunny Floyd is prominently featured.
Fort
Worth
resident
and
Hollywood
veteran
Huckabee
says,
“It
touches
on
real
issues
that
countless
families
have
to
face
in
dealing
with
old
age
and
the
effect
Alzheimer’s
can
have
on
the
family
unit.
The
subject
matter
should
not
be
taboo.
With
our
aging
population,
we
need
to
deal
with
our
elders
in
the
most
respectful
way
possible.
I
want
those
who
have
an
experience
of
dementia
to
watch
the
film
and
realize
they
are
not
alone and I want others to watch it because not only is it thought provoking, it’s fun.”
